2026 WPE
We have developed a new Work Performance Evaluation (WPE) course at the IFD Health and Wellness Center (HWC) located at old Station 54 at 8025 Combs Road. This video shows you the course and what you need to be able to do physically to complete it.

Indianapolis Fire Department Work Performance Evaluation (WPE)
This is the order in which a firefighter will do these events. The entire course is to be done in 09:04 or less.
- Ladder Carry
- The firefighter will begin the test by carrying a 16โ ladder 70ft to the next event.
- The time begins as soon as the firefighter lifts the ladder.
- Ladder raise
- Once the ladder is placed on the ground, the firefighter must lift a ladder from the ground and raise the ladder to the upright position to the wall.
- The ladder is 24โ and must be attached to a pulley system for safety.
- Ladder extension
- The firefighter will raise one section of 24โ ladder.
- The ladder is affixed to the wall in the upright position.
- They must raise the fly section all the way up and down in a controlled manner.
- Ladder climb
- The firefighter will climb to the top of a 16โ ladder at an approximately 70-degree angle.
- Ladder carry back
- Firefighter will take back the 16โ ladder another 70 feet to the start line.
- Manual ventilation
- To simulate manual ventilation the firefighter will strike a tire ten times
- The firefighter will use a sledgehammer on the tire.
- They must raise the hammer above their shoulder for the rep to count.
- Stair Climb and High Rise Pack Carry
- Firefighter will walk approximately 120 feet to a flight of stairs.
- They will carry a high rise pack that is 40 pounds.
- They can carry the high-rise pack on either shoulder and then will ascend the stairs twice.
- Hose Advancement
- Firefighter will advance a 1 ยพ hose line 52ft to the next event.
- Hose line can be advanced anyway, over the shoulder or by their side.
- Place the nozzle down at a cone.
- Search Maze
- This event is a total of 26ft.
- The maze is a tunnel without light. There are no obstacles inside the tunnel
- Firefighter is to crawl through the maze to the other side.
- Our maze is in the shape of a โLโ the long side is 15ft and the short side is 11ft. The width is 4ft. With a depth of 3ft.
- Hose Return
- The firefighter will then walk back to the start of the hose advancement event.
- They will then pull the hose back to the start over their shoulder. The firefighter should be standing,
- The event is complete once the nozzle is back by the firefighterโs feet.
- Ceiling Breach
- Firefighter will simulate a ceiling breach in this event.
- There is a cage with weights affixed to the stop of it, that weighs 85 pounds.
- Firefighter must use a 5 ยฝ ft pike pole to lift the 85 pounds and then pull down a lever with the pike pole.
- Firefighter will complete three reps of each event for two rounds
- Tool Carry
- Firefighter will carry two saws that are around 53 pounds and 35 pounds.
- They will walk 74 feet down and back with the saws in each hand.
- Victim Rescue (Dummy Drag)
- Firefighter will drag a rescue dummy weighing about 165 pounds 35ft.
