MEDAL OF VALOR The Medal of Valor will be awarded to a uniformed member of the Indianapolis Fire Department who conspicuously performs an act of gallantry and valor involving EXTREME risk of his/her own life while attempting a rescue. The deed performed shall have been of personal bravery or self sacrifice so conspicuous as to clearly distinguish the individual’s act.

MEDAL OF BRAVERY The Medal of Bravery will be awarded to a uniformed member of the Indianapolis Fire Department on the basis of an exemplary performance while COURAGEOUSLY risking his/her own life while confronting a dangerous situation in the attempt of saving a human life.

MEDAL OF MERIT The Medal of Merit will be awarded to a uniformed member of the Indianapolis Fire Department on the basis of outstanding performance and must have been such as to merit recognition for service which is FAR beyond the normal requirement of fire department duties.

CERTIFICATE OF MERIT A Certificate of Merit will be awarded to a uniformed member of the Indianapolis Fire Department on the basis of outstanding performance and must have been such as to merit recognition for service which is beyond the normal requirements of fire department duties.

PROFESSIONAL EXCELLENCE AWARD To be awarded to a uniformed member of the Indianapolis Fire Department on the basis of service rendered in an outstanding manner excelling in his/her regular assigned firefighting/EMS duties.

UNIT COMMENDATION Unit Commendation will be awarded to those uniformed members of the Indianapolis Fire Department who belonging to a single unit, act as one to accomplish a task in a meritorious manner.

PUBLIC SERVICE AWARD To be awarded when a uniformed member of the Indianapolis Fire Department has demonstrated a direct contribution to the community in the form of donated time with a not-for-profit organization, which is NOT in his/her job description.

CITIZENS COMMENDATION Whenever a civilian renders valuable or courageous assistance to members of the Fire Department, particularly in cases of saving a life or attempting to save a life, the firefighters involved shall submit through the normal chain of command, an official report containing all pertinent facts to be reviewed and acted upon by the awards by the Awards Committee. A citizen selected for commendation shall be publicly honored b the department and presented with an appropriate citation during award ceremonies.

PUBLIC SAFETY SERVICE CERTIFICATE OF MERIT Shall be awarded to a member of the Division of Public Safety, another Municipal EMS or Fire Department on the basis of the individual’s outstanding performance and must have been such as to merit recognition for service which is beyond the requirements of his/her normal assigned duties.

PUBLIC SAFETY SERVICE COMMENDATION Shall be awarded to a member of the Division of Public Safety, another Municipal EMS or Fire Department on the basis services rendered to the Indianapolis Fire Department in an outstanding manner excelling in his/her regularly assigned duties.

Administrative Officer of the Year: A firefighter who demonstrates leadership, managerial and organizational skills and is in an administrative position.

Community Firefighter of the Year: A firefighter who has contributed an exceptional amount of time and talent to off-duty, department-related outreach and/or a not-for–profit organization in the community.

EMS Firefighter of the Year: A firefighter who performs outstanding EMS patient care and service while on a run or throughout their daily assigned duties.

Engine Engineer of the Year: A firefighter responsible for safe delivery of personnel and equipment to the fire scene, operates engine equipment and may assist fire victims or personnel.

Ladder Engineer of the Year: A firefighter responsible for safe delivery of personnel and equipment to the fire scene, operates ladder equipment and may assist fire victims or personnel.

Fire Rescue of the Year: A firefighter who affected a rescue during a life threatening situation.

Operations Firefighter of the Year: An accomplished firefighter who possesses knowledge of all aspects of firefighting.

Rookie of the Year: A firefighter with 3 years or less on the job, who has demonstrated proficiency in teamwork, firefighting and community service both on scene and off.

Civilian Administrator of the Year: An IFD civilian employee who demonstrates leadership, managerial and organizational skills and is an Administrative position.
