IFD,
See the below announcement about EMS gear being distributed by the Quartermaster.
- Shipments will arrive weekly in sets of 100 until we receive all 1200.
- The Quartermaster is trying to maintain station integrity as they purchase and distribute the gear.
- This is a major effort by the Quartermaster to order, receive, sort, and deliver 1200 sets. Please have patience.
- See GO 9.08: Protective Clothing and Equipment for specific guidance concerning EMS gear.

Quartermaster Announcement
The Quartermaster Services Division is excited to announce that the first 100 sets of EMS gear will begin being distributed today. This is a tremendous accomplishment for our entire Department and one we are all very proud of. This is just another example of how our Department has gone above and beyond to provide the best possible health and safety equipment possible to each and every one of us, during these unprecedented times. Your EMS boots will also be issued to you at the same time you receive your EMS gear. If you have not been sized for your EMS boots yet, you will receive notification from the Quartermaster when your EMS gear has arrived. You will then be responsible to come down to the Quartermaster and be sized for your EMS boots and pick up your EMS gear. There are a few individuals that have yet to be sized for EMS gear. If you are one of those individuals, you will be detailed to the Quartermaster, at some point, to be sized.
Your EMS gear is to be worn primarily on EMS runs. Do not wear your EMS gear on extrication runs. A General Order will follow that relates to all of this information. Your gear should be solely cleaned and serviced by the Quartermaster Division. Do not wash your EMS gear in a station fire gear washer. First, your EMS gear will become cross contaminated. Secondly, those gear washers are not set at the factory settings deemed appropriate, by the manufacturer, to clean your EMS gear properly. You will shorten the lifespan of your EMS gear in doing so. Third, the Quartermaster wash system is a lot more efficient and has ozone cleaning properties which remove all viral and biological properties that you are exposed to daily. You request a cleaning of your EMS gear the same way you do for your fire gear. It’s easy and simple to request service so don’t neglect your gear, it’s the only set you have.
Your EMS gear comes with a detachable hood and a winter liner. When you receive your EMS gear, your winter liner is not attached but the hood is. If you wish to install the winter liner, do so. If you choose to leave the winter liner out of your EMS coat or remove the attached hood, you are responsiable for the safe storage of those items. There are no replacements so if either of those items come up missing, you are out of luck.
There is no NFPA Standard that designates replacement of EMS gear after ten years. With that said, there is no money budgeted, at this time, to replace your EMS gear in the future so take care of your equipment, this may be the only set you are ever issued.
If you have any questions relative to your EMS gear, please feel free to call the Quartermaster Division.
Respectfully,
Richard B. Cook
