PIO Helpful Hints

You are here: IFD Resources > Executive > Media Relations > PIO Helpful Hints

If your division, battalion or station has scheduled an event or training – please notify the PIO in advance for media or social media interest. As available, the PIO will try to attend and get photos for publication. Should the PIO not be available, and with approval of the officer in charge, content may be acquired and submitted to the IFD PIO for consideration… to be posted on the approved and official Indianapolis Fire Department social media pages. Here are some more points to consider:

  • Submitted content will be reviewed but is not guaranteed for publication.
  • Content submitted may include a division event, station or battalion training, a positive moment at the station such as a milestone celebration, interaction with a citizen or an unexpected occurrence etc. At no time should photos for submission be taken anywhere in the station other than out front, the kitchen or apparatus bay areas.
  • Firefighters must be appropriately uniformed and groomed for consideration.
  • Content must be carefully curated, on all levels and will not be considered if deemed inappropriate in any way.
  • Please keep in mind the following tips when creating content for submission.

VIDEO TIPS

Video should always be recorded horizontally…

Video clips should be recorded in HD – preferably 4K – no more than 30 seconds in length. If you submit more than that – the PIO can clip them together.

Focus on ONE THING at a time in the video clip. Do not move the camera back and forth like you are at a tennis match. Do not try to cover the entire scene. Submit three or 4 clips that show different points of interest.

PHOTO TIPS

Photos should be taken horizontally and should include wide shots and close up views.

Photos must be clear and of good quality. Please don’t submit fuzzy photos

Multiple photos are preferred. Minimum of 4-5 good clear shots. More is ok too – not all may be used

Please do not take photos or videos through a window.

Social media content is intended to be timely and may be submitted via text or email. Content should be sent no later than 1 or 2 hours after the event but at the latest – same day.
